Design a Postage Stamp Lesson Plan

Appropriate for Grades 4 - 7.

Find some stamps on envelopes lying around your house. Based upon what you see, design your own set of personal stamps that you might use on your letters. Come up with a set of five different stamps.

1. Start MS Publisher
2. Choose the Blank Publication tab from the Catalog window.
3. Click on the Full Page picture then click the Create button
4. Choose Print Setup from the File menu.
5. Click Landscape and click the OK button.
6. Choose the rectangle tool from the Toolbox.
7. Draw a rectangle that is approximately 10 cm x 5 cm (3 inches x 2 inches)
8. Choose the text tool from the Toolbox.
9. Click and drag out a text box.
10. Type the name of the country.
11. Chang the font, size and style of the name.
12. Click on the text box and drag it into the stamp.
13. Place it along the inside, top edge.
14. Choose the text tool from the Toolbox.
15. Click and drag out a text box.
16. Type the price of the stamp.
17. Chang the font, size and style of the price.
18. Click on the text box and drag it into the stamp.
19. Place it along the inside, bottom right corner.
20. Choose Picture - Clipart from the Insert menu.
21. Click on a category that matches your stamp's theme.
22. Click on a picture then click on the top choice in the menu that appears. (Insert clip)
23. Click on the picture and drag it into position on the page.
24. Click and hold on one of the black "handles".
25. Drag the handle in to shrink it so that the picture fits into the stamp
26. Repeat from Step 5 for each of the stamps in your set
27. Choose Save As: from the File menu.
28. Navigate to your floppy disk or folder.
29. Type a name and click the Save button
30. Choose Print from the File menu.
31. Click the OK button.

Software: Desktop Publishing, Paper, Printer
