ID Card Lesson Plan

45 minutes

Word Processor, Paper, Printer

To develop an understanding of:

1. the layout of a ID Card
2. Inserting pictures.
3. checking spelling and grammar

Acquire a few different ID cards from people whom you know. Remove their names and personal details. Copy them for the class to view on paper or overhead projector. If you have a computer projector, save them as a file. Show these to the students.

Examine the parts of the IDs. Look at the layout and what information is contained in each. Discuss what they might put in their own ID’s. Have students list this information so that they can refer to it when typing their own ID. Discuss how they will prepare a ready-made ID then do their own.

* Start Microsoft Word.
* Choose Save As: from the File menu.
Navigate to your floppy disk or folder.
* Type a name for your file – ID CARD.
* Click the Save button.
* Choose Page Setup from the File menu.
* Set these margins: Top 2cm Bottom 20cm Left 2cm Right 10.5 cm
* Click the OK button.
* Type the heading St Kevin’s College ID Card.
* Press the Enter key twice.
* Type Name: Joe Blow and press Enter.
* Type Grade: Year 10 J and press Enter twice.
* Type D.O.B. 17.12.83 and press Enter twice.
* Type Signature: …………………… and press Enter twice.
* Type Valid for the Year 2000 only.
* Select all the text and set the font to Arial.
* Choose the heading, bold it and set the font size to 14.
* Select the other text and set it to size 11.
* Bold each of the headings e.g. Name
* Select the last line and set to font size 8.
* Choose Picture: Clipart from the Insert menu.
* Click on Buildings.
* Insert the picture called Cities (The names show when you leave the mouse over the picture).
* Adjust the size of the picture so that it is covers the card.(See illustration.)
* Right click on the picture and choose Format Picture.
* Click on the Layout tab then choose Behind Text.
* Click on the Picture tab.
* Choose Grayscale from the Color drop down menu.
* Click the OK button.
* Click the button in the Picture menu until the picture becomes very light in the background of the card.
* If the picture doesn’t move to the back, right click on it and choose Order: Send Behind Text.
* Choose Picture: Clipart from the Insert menu.
* Click on People.
* Insert a picture of a person’s face or insert a scan of yourself.
* Adjust the size of the picture so that it is fits on the card.(See illustration.)
* Drag it into place in the right corner.
* Hold down the Ctrl key and press S to save your work.
* Choose Print from the File menu.
* Click the OK button to produce a paper copy of your work.
