Introduction (Focus Involve Transfer)
Prepare some cut outs of squares and circles a head of time.
Using construction paper cut outs, of squares and circles show your students that
Two halves make a whole,
Four fourths make a whole; two fourths are the same as one half etc.
Instruction (Guided Practice, Procedures.)
Give your students tag board patterns, scissors and construction paper.
Get them to cut out squares and circles.
Get them to cut them into halves, fourths, thirds, etc.
Get them to paste there cut outs on construction paper of contrasting colors.
Get them to label one half, one fourth, one third, etc.
Get students to draw squares and circles on paper
Get them to divide Their squares and circles into halves, thirds, and fourths.
Summary, Closure
Post student’s work on class bulletin boards.
Let students take their projects home after they have been displayed for a few days.

Suggestions
Keep your tag board patterns small.
Store them in manila envelopes for easy filing.
Use construction paper that is a seasonal color, or use up the odd colors that you have a lot of, but don’t use very often.

This lesson will take one or two class periods.
Students can recognize halves, fourths and thirds.
